Description
Brown stoneware jug known as the “Old Sarum Leather Gill” or the “Old Salisbury Leather Jack”. This was made by Doulton for Watson’s China Ship at Ye House of John A’Port in Salisbury.
It is based on an old leather jug said to have been in Salisbury Museum but now missing and untraceable. According to Watson & Co. the original was made locally for King Charles I when he visited Salisbury and had a banquet there in 1646.
This mug was in production between 1905 and 1939.
(cf The Doulton Lambeth Wares 2002, Desmond Eyes, revised by Louise Irvine, page 273).
