Description
Cologne salt-glazed stoneware.
Old numbers C.579.56-28-5, and ‘St ALBANS’. Hertfordshire Museum label may indicate High Street, St Albans; should be checked with UV source. Lacks handle and part of rim and design. This is identical to a vessel from Bishopsgate, London, Museum of London MoL 6333, illustrated D.Gaimster, German Stoneware 1200-1900. Archaeology and cultural history (London, BMP, 1997), no 42. It is ascribed to Cologne, possibly the Maximinenstrasse workshop, 1525-50, and shows applied rectangular panels with scenes from the parable of Dives and Lazarus. The missing section could be restored with a cast from the MoL vessel.
