Portrait of Sir Nicholas Bacon, with ornate decorative frame. Sir Nicholas Bacon (1510 – 1579) was a politician and Lord Keeper of the Great Seal under Queen Elizabeth I. He was given the manor of Gorhambury, near St Albans, by King Henry VIII following the Dissolution of the Monasteries, where he built a new house between 1563 to 1568. This was also the home of his youngest son, Sir Francis Bacon (1561 - 1626), English statesman, philosopher and essayist. The ruins of the Tudor house still stand on the Gorhambury Estate.
