Description
Spindle whorl

Did you know… Many people have changed their gender presentation in the past.
Elagabalus was emperor between 218 to 222AD.
In public Elagabalus dressed like an emperor, but expected to be addressed as ‘Lady’ and not ‘Lord’, wore women’s clothing, and practiced traditionally ‘female’ tasks – like spinning wool, a typical Roman pastime for ‘good virtuous women’. Spindle whorls like this one were fitted on to spindles to speed up and maintain the spin.
