Ellen Craft (c. 1826 – c. 1897) was an American slave who was the daughter of a slave woman and her white master. Her famous escape from slavery was widely publicised and used by abolitionists to support their cause. During her escape, she disguised herself as a white man, as she is depicted here, while her husband posed as her manservant.
