Description
Line and stipple engraving, portrait of Francis Egerton, Duke of Bridgewater, 230 x 145 mm (plate size). Engraved by E. Scriven after a painting by Craig. Published by Fisher, Son & Co., London, 1847, Inscribed on reverse "from sir John Evans 1907".
Francis Egerton (1736-1803) lived at Ashridge near Berkhamsted in Hertfordshire. He is known as the founder of British inland navigation, since he commissioned the Bridgewater Canal to service his coal mines at Worsley, in Lancashire. This is usually considered the first modern British canal. On completion, the price of coal in Manchester was immediately reduced by half.
The Bridgewater Monument on the Ashridge estate was built in his memory, with a view to the Grand Union Canal from its top.
