Portrait of Sir John Evans (1823-1908). Sir John Evans was an English archaeologist, geologist and numismatist (coin collector) and was also instrumental in founding the Hertfordshire County Museum (now the Museum of St Albans). He lived at Nash Mills, Hemel Hempstead. He is shown here seated half-length, looking down at us, holding a favourite object; a small female classical head.
