Monochrome photographic print, 108 x 83 mm.
The Earl of Verulam's steamer, c.1900. Early cars were often driven by steam, not much of a problem when staff carried out the lengthy process of getting up steam. The petrol engine was more responsive but steam remained as a competitor until the petrol engine and the supply of its fuel had achived a higher degree of reliabilty.
