Description
Watercolour by G. Shepherd, dated 1809. Untitled scene showing a view looking up Fishpool Street, St Albans, from the junction with Branch Road. A coach painted "St Albans to London" is driving towards town while a horse and cart is being led by a man in the opposite direction. St Albans Abbey tower can be seen in the distance. Shop sign to the left reads "John Ewington". This building is now The Black Lion Hotel, while the building on the opposite side of the road with the ornate door lintel is now The Blue Anchor pub. The lower building to the right of this has since been demolished.
Fishpool Street was one of the main routes into St Albans at this time.
