Description
The old Black Lion Inn, Bishop's Stortford. Signed [P/T?] C. Dibdin, 1848. Tinted lithograph published by D Bogue.
Victorians were fascinated by picturesque decay, but the reality was that houses like these were probably unpleasant - if not dangerous - to live in, and tended to be occupied by the poor. Many were pulled down, but the fine Tudor Black Lion has survived, albeit heavily restored, in Bridge Street.
