Description
The London-Birmingham Railway: "Tring Cutting June 19th 1837."
Drawn and lithographed by John Cooke Bourne for his Drawings of the London and Birmingham Railway. Published London 1839 by J C Bourne 19 Lamb's Conduit Street and Ackermann & Co Strand.
This famous scene shows the construction of the huge cutting at Tring, which runs dead straight for over a mile. Bourne has not greatly exaggerated its size, and it remains a most impressive sight, when we consider that it was dug by hand. Here Bourne illustrates the railway 'navvies' at their dangerous, and frequently fatal work, taking wheelbarrows up - and down - slippery wooden runs while roped to the horse engines above.
