Description
Print of the coat of arms of the Earls of Verulam, with the latin motto "Mediocria Firma", variously translated as "mediocrity is safe", "moderation is stable", or "the middle ground is best". Underneath a handwritten note reads "Grimston", presumably for the Grimston family, who have lived at Gorhambury of the past 300 years and succeeded the Bacon family as Earls of Verulam.
This was the motto of Sir Nicholas Bacon, former Earl of Verulam who lived at Gorehambury and was famously the father of Sir Francis Bacon.
Lord Nicholas Bacon was adviser to Queen Elizabeth I and her Lord Keeper of the Privy Seal. He was later knighted, made a member of the Privy Council and Lord Chancellor.
