Description
Steel etching by George Cooke 1826, later state lacking flock of birds roosting on the Clock Tower, on India laid paper, 108 × 149.
St Albans Clock Tower viewed from High Street looking up Market Place. Label reads "Drawn by James Burton Jun[io]r / George Cooke 1826.". The shop sign on the Clock Tower reads, “Gibbs Printing Office – GIBBS – Broker and Pawn Brokerâ€. Brothers, George and John Gibbs took over the lease on the lower floors of the Clock Tower from 1824 until 1829.
The source for several copy prints of this scene. Shows the shop in front of the Tower, the pump and a ?gas light within railings, and market in progress in the Market Place.
Better impression than 1998.5083 - to be preferred. For conservation?
