Did you know… Women challenged gender norms in Ancient Rome.
Due to ancient medical, scientific and philosophical understandings of the body women were medically, philosophically, and culturally regarded as unformed, or ill-formed men. Women were never regarded as full citizens like men. Freeborn women in ancient Rome were citizens but could not vote or hold political office.
There is evidence that some women challenged this. A tomb of a female gladiator was found in London, near to the amphitheatre. Her tomb contained remnants of a feast and several oil lamps, showing a fallen gladiator and the god Mercury, who was associated with the dead bodies of gladiators. Some of the lamps in her tomb were made in Verulamium [and would have been similar to this one].
