escutcheon

Details

Description
Escutcheon from a vessel in the form of a ?female head with a loop on the crown: a fragment of ring remains within the loop. The head has rounded features with full lips and a broad nose. The hair is rolled back from the face. The is no sign that the escutcheon continued below the chin. It was probably1 of a pair of escutcheon handles soldered to the side of a vessel such as a small bucket with a swing handle which was iserted into the 2 rings. ( like the medussa mask from Gadebridge park - Toynbee in Neal 1974)
